Pennsylvania State University move-in checklist

Late August in State College is warm and muggy — highs in the low 80s°F and many older traditional halls have no AC. By November it's grey and damp, with lows in the 20s°F and the first real snow typically arriving before Thanksgiving.

Things Penn State doesn't put in the brochure.

  • First-year students admitted to University Park are required to live on campus — the housing contract is included with admission and a $100 non-refundable deposit secures it.
  • Traditional East, South, West, and Pollock halls have no central AC — late August move-in is hot and humid, so pack a fan and plan for sticky first weeks.
  • Arrival Days are spread Thursday–Saturday before Welcome Week, with early arrival starting the Monday prior; expect a check-in slot, not a free-for-all.
  • Address packages with the format 'Nittany Lion / [Building] room [###] / [Area] [Street] / University Park, PA 16802' — wrong format causes delays in the eLiving system.
  • Hoverboards and electric scooters are banned due to lithium battery fires — this is enforced.
  • Football Saturdays at Beaver Stadium completely take over State College — don't schedule deliveries or family visits on home-game weekends.
