UCLA quirks that apply
- The Hill sits up a steep slope from class — a folding wagon or dolly is genuinely useful on move-in day and freshmen on r/ucla recommend one every year.
- UCLA bans personal microwaves and mini-fridges — you must rent an approved MicroFridge unit through the housing vendor, so don't ship one from home.
- Classic Hill halls (Dykstra, Rieber, Hedrick, Sproul) have no AC; LA can still hit 85°F+ in mid-September, so a fan is a must for the first few weeks.
- BruinCard is your room key, dining swipe, and gym pass — pick it up before move-in if possible to avoid the day-of line.
- Closets on The Hill are small and most rooms are doubles or triples — pack a slim collapsible hamper and over-door organizers rather than freestanding furniture.
- Bikes are usable but not essential on UCLA's compact campus — most freshmen walk or take the BruinBus from The Hill to class.
